This description is for Syringa meyeri: Native to China and Japan, Syringa meyeri or Meyer lilac is an attractive species of lilac that has been given an Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society. It will grow up to seven foot tall and has spikes of purple flowers that bloom early in the summer. The flowers have a nice fragrance. This is one of the smaller species of lilac so its a good choice for a smaller garden. The leaves start out pale green with a red edge and turn a dark green as they mature. It flowers at a young age, so if you buy a young plant you wont have long to wait for the blooms to appear.
