Satureja montana or Winter Savory is a small bushy shrub growing to around 16 inches in height. It has dark green leaves with a grey tint, and lots of pale purple flowers that grow on stalks making this a pretty addition to the garden as well as being an edible herb. Winter Savory has a slightly more bitter taste than Summer Savory. It works well with chicken, beans and meat and can be made into a nice stuffing. It will lose flavour if cooked for too long. Winter Savory needs at least 6 hours of sunlight a day, and requires soil with good drainage. It is also said to cure flatulence.
