This description is for Salvia officinalis: Salvia officinalis is commonly known as garden sage. Native to the Mediterranean, it has long been used for culinary and medicinal purposes. It is also attractive to look at, with evergreen oval grey-green leaves, and blue-purple flowers, so it can be used for ornamental purposes too. Sage was sacred to the Romans who believed it had healing properties, and it has long been used to ward off evil. Its very hardy and easy to grow. It will grow up to 75cm in height. There are also some variegated varieties, however these tend to be a little less hardy. The word Salvia comes from the Latin word salvere meaning to save, a reference to the healing properties of this plant.
