With the common name, Littleleaf Sage, it comes as no surprise the key feature of Salvia microphylla is its sparse foliage, which features some of the smallest leaves of the genus. Ovate shaped and bright to mid-green in colour, they measure only a few centimetres in length. Littleleaf Sage is a woody perennial shrub that, in summer, has a delicate sprinkling of two-lipped tubular blossoms. The bottom lip fans out, while the top is a narrow hood and, depending on the variety, can be hot red, baby pink or magenta. An aggressive spreader, it thrives in well-drained loam soil and is an impressive addition to an informal garden.
