This description is for Plantago major: Plantago major or common plantain is a little bit like a combat medic – tough yet healing. This resilient plant has a great ability to withstand trampling and offers a range of medicinal uses. The oval-shaped leaves lie very close to or on the ground, while clusters of flowers are produced on elongated narrow stems. In addition to its medicinal value, common plantain can also be used in meals. Young leaves can be eaten raw in salads and older leaves are suitable for the likes of teas and stews. Common plantain loves full sunlight but it grows in partial shade as well. It does well in clay, sandy or loamy soil that is kept moist and well-drained. This plant can be grown in a variety of locations, such as flower beds and borders or designated herb gardens. It is also a handy ally for fighting soil erosion.
