This description is for Mentha x piperita f. citrata: Also known by its synonym, Mentha citrata, the key attraction to Mentha x piperita f. citrata is the distinctive fragrance of its crushed foliage, comparable to cologne. It is this fact that lies behind its common name, Eau de Cologne Mint. Like most other species, this vigorous spreading perennial sports ovate, dark green leaves but they sometimes flush deep red when in the hot sun. The Eau de Cologne Mint has red stems, from which dense terminal spikes of small, light purple blossoms emerge in summer. A lover of moist soil in full sun, it’s happiest near water features provided the ground is well drained. Pruning by cutting back after flowering helps contain its spread.
