This description is for Lycopersicon esculentum: Lycopersicon esculentum is much better known, of course, by its everyday name of tomato plant. The fruit of the tomato plant hardly needs any introduction, as its used in cooking and eaten raw in salads the world over. Tomato plants need lots of sunshine to get the best from the fruit, so its often best to grow them in a greenhouse if you live in a cooler climate. Tomato plants usually grow between one and three metres in height and may well require some extra support once the heavy fruit appears as the stems can be a little weak. Tomatoes have been grown for a very long time, evidence of their cultivation dates back to 500BC. Sadly our modern varieties have had the natural sweetness bred out of them in the pursuit of bright red colouring.
