Lycium barbarum or Chinese Wolfberry is the plant from which we get the goji berry, a popular superfood. It grows between one and three metres in height and is native to Northern China. It has green leaves that are oval in shape, sometimes with a pointed tip. It has purple flowers and produces bright orange- red oval shaped berries. Goji berries have long since been used in Chinese medicine and have more recently become popular further afield due to their high nutritional value. It was introduced into the UK in the 1730s and can still be found growing wild in hedgerows. The berries are a favourite food of many wild birds.
