A hybrid of Lonicera sempervirens and Lonicera tragophylla, the clear attraction to Lonicera x tellmanniana is the cartwheel-shaped cluster of bright orange-yellow flowers that emerge in summer. A vigorous twining deciduous climber, it can grow to a significant size when given sufficient room, and its comfort in partial sun means it’s perfect for courtyard gardens and other sheltered locations. Its foliage comprises glossy, lance-shaped, dark green leaves with perfoliated leaves at its stem ends, from which its intriguing floral blooms emerge. Known as Tellmann’s Honeysuckle, it grows best in moist but well-drained soil in full sun. Pruning is necessary to curtail its vigorous growth and maintain shape.
