This description is for Beta vulgaris subsp. Vulgaris: Beta vulgaris subsp. Vulgaris, or Beet, is the umbrella name for a variety of plants, many of which are grown for their edible varieties. These include beetroot, chard and sugar beet. Most are easy to grow, and flower during the summer months, with fruits and leaves maturing in late summer and autumn. They need a full sunlight position to best thrive, and will need to be sheltered from strong winds and driving rain. They’re also susceptible to frost, so cover during the colder months of the year for protection.
