This description is for Artemisia abrotanum: Artemisia abrotanum is also known as Sweet Benjamin, Southernwood or Medicinal wormwood. It has been used historically as an air freshener due to its strong camphor aroma. Its a small bushy shrub with pretty feathery grey-green foliage and small yellow flowers. It has been used throughout history for its antiseptic properties. The Romans thought it protected men from impotence and 17th Century herbalist Culpeper believed that it encouraged menstruation. It is sometimes still used today in a poultice to treat frostbite. It is thought to be a treatment for dandruff if applied as a hair rinse, and is an insect repellent when applied to the skin. Its also a useful plant if you keep chickens; grow it in their run and they are less likely to pick at their own feathers.
