Sour Cherry 'Schattenmorelle'

Prunus cerasus 'Schattenmorelle' | Also known as: Pie Cherry 'Schattenmorelle', Morello cherry 'Schattenmorelle', Cherry bush 'Crown Morello' 'Schattenmorelle' | Rating: 0 votes | Print / Pdf

Another favourite amongst the cherry trees, it sports a rounded canopy almost the same width as its height. Like most in its genus, the Sour Cherry is hardy and requires cold winters to ensure its spectacular display of white flowers does not disappoint. It thrives when planted in full reach of the sun, but is happiest in moist soil. We wouldn’t advise eating its fruit straight from the tree though; its taste is quite sour, making it best suited for tarts and jams, which goes some way to explaining its common names.
