The saucer magnolia flew in from France

Magnolia x soulangeana also goes by the name of saucer magnolia. It's a hybrid multi-stemmed tree with gorgeous large cup-shaped flowers that bloom early in the season before the leaves appear giving it a rather dramatic appearance. The flowers are purple, pink or white. It's one of the most popular types of magnolia, especially in the UK and USA. It was created in France by retired cavalry officer Etienne Soulange-Bodin in 1820. It likes moist neutral or acidic soil. Plant it somewhere with protection from the wind and ensure it gets some sun.
