Butterflies cannot flutter-by this beautiful flowering plant

If you want a bright and colourful addition to your garden, Rudbeckia hirta or Black-eyed Susan won't disappoint. It's native to the USA and is a member of the Asteraceae family. It will grow up to a metre in height. The leaves are long, up to 18cm and mainly grow around the base of the plant. The are covered in thick rough hairs. It has sturdy stems at the top of which are bright yellow daisy-shaped flowers with a black button centre. The flower heads are about 10cm wide. It's named after Olaus Rudbeck, a Swedish professor of botany. It's the state flower of Maryland and will bring butterflies to your garden. It also makes a good, long lasting cut flower.

Rudbeckia hirta 'Cherry Brandy' or Black-eyed Susan 'Cherry Brandy' is the first ever red variety of rudbeckia. It's a very hardy plant, and will cope well with both poor soil and excessive heat, giving you masses of cherry red, daisy-like flowers that will bloom all summer. The blooms have a large deep red button like centre, the petals are a deep red in the centre, fading to a bright cherry red towards the edges. They make a great cut flower and will last in water for up to a fortnight. Remove dead flower heads to encourage further blooms to grow; water and feed regularly.
