Phyllostachys nigra or black bamboo is native to China. It will grow up to 16ft high and 10ft wide. It's called black bamboo as when they mature, the stems take on a black hue. These cane stems are long and arching, and the leaves are lance-shaped and green, growing prolifically towards the upper ends of the canes. These leaves can grow up to 12cm long. The bamboo canes of this species have been used to make musical instruments and also used for food. It's an attractive plant with its grooved canes and works well as an interesting architectural hedge. It likes a moist soil and either full sun or partial shade.
