Barrenwort

Epimedium sutchuenense | Also known as: Fairy wings, Bishop's hat | Rating: 0 votes | Print / Pdf

A native of China, Epimedium sutchuenense or fairy wings is an evergreen flowering plant. The flowers have white sepals and deep purple spurs. It looks almost like some sort of long-legged insect. When the leaves appear they're mottled with red, fading to a dark green. Each flower stem has two leaves. It likes shade or partial shade, and rich moist soil with good drainage. It grows naturally on slopes. A good choice for interesting ground cover, especially if you're looking for a plant for a shaded area.
