Fargesia scabrida was first discovered in China in the 1970s. It's a tall growing bamboo reaching around 3-4 metres in height. It's an evergreen plant that will grow in clumps, It's good for creating a screen due to its' dense nature and height. This type of bamboo is less invasive than many others so you should be able to control the size and spread of this plant. The bamboo stalks change colour as the plant ages, from blue-black to red. It will grow best in rich moist soil in a sunny position, preferably one that gets some shade at the start and end of the day.
Fargesia scabrida 'Asian Wonder' is a non-invasive clumping bamboo that has been newly introduced from China and is proving to be very popular. It's an evergreen with dark purple stalks and contrasting reddish brown leaves. This variety is the food of the Giant Panda in China. It's very hardy and grows well in flower beds, as a screen or hedge, and even thrives in a pot as long as it gets plenty of water. It will grow in sun or shade to a height of around 3.5 to 4.5 metres tall with a spread of 0.6 to 1 metre.
