Clematis armandii 'Apple Blossom' | Rating: votes| Print / Pdf
Clematis armandii is also known as Armand clematis. This is a fast climber with delicate white flowers that have a lovely scent similar to hawthorn blossom. It was originally discovered in China by by the famous plant hunter Ernest Wilson and introduced into England in 1900. This is a tender variety and so is best suited to a sunny sheltered position out of the wind. Frost damage will turn the leaves an unattractive brown colour. After flowering, remove any dead growth, other than this it requires no further pruning. They are also quite prone to disease and pest damage. Not really a clematis for a beginner.
There are around 300 species of Clematis. They're very popular in gardens with stunning large flowers. Most species are climbing and look beautiful trained up a trellis. Most species are native to China or Japan. They will grow best with cool moist roots and plenty of sun. They'll grow in most types of fertile soil. They are fairly easy to grow but are susceptible to various diseases and also to pests so they can be a little high maintenance. There are loads of different colour varieties, from white to lilac, pink and rich burgundy. The flowers are usually large and star shaped.
