There are around 90 species and more than 600 hybrids in the Hippeastrum genus. Native to tropical and subtropical countries, they are often grown for their showy flowers. They often incorrectly called amaryllis and as it flowers over winter is a popular Christmas gift. The plants have between two and seven leaves, the plants grow to a maximum of 3ft tall and a foot across. The stems are tall and sturdy, hollow in the centre and bearing between two and fifteen flower heads. The flowers are large, up to 20cm in diameter, trumpet shaped and brightly coloured. It's a tender plant so it's best suited as a houseplant in cooler climates.
