Potentilla neumanniana 'Nana' | Also known as: Spring Cinquefoil 'Nana', Spotted Cinquefoil 'Nana' | Rating: votes| Print / Pdf
Sometimes the simplest plants make the biggest impression, and the Potentilla neumanniana is a perfect example. Also known as the Alpine Cinquefoil or Spring Cinquefoil, this delicate-looking low-growing shrub can spread out quickly, creating a carpet of green sprinkled with butter-yellow, with the flowers seeming to nestle on the foliage due to their low stems. Its shallow roots make it ideal for marginal areas of a garden, around patios, rockies and verges that may be too narrow to accommodate larger plants. But they can also brighten up a hanging basket or add a playful contrast as groundcover around more serious bushes and shrubs.
As a genus, Potentilla has about 180 species to its name, comprising annual, biennial and perennial flowering evergreen shrubs, so there is no shortage of options to fit your vision of your own garden. Also know as Cinquefoil, it usually features a deep green foliage sprinkled with small but vibrant five-petalled yellow flowers. Low growing and low maintenance, the Potentilla is at home in most soil types, from clay to rocky and can survive transplanting several times. It’s often grown as a hedgerow, offering bright, rich edging around lawns and paths. Pruning is recommended to ensure healthy growth.
A small and very pretty deciduous flowering perennial, potentilla atrosanguinea var. argyrophylla brings a refreshing splash of colour to a summer garden. Commonly known as the Himalayan cinquefoil, its foliage looks wirey and unkempt, but comprises palmate, dark green leaves, each with usually three severely serrated, hairy, ovate leaflets. From summer to mid-autumn, its erect, branching stems produce small, saucer-shaped blossoms, usually orange-yellow with dark centres and sporting five slightly lobed petals. The Himalayan cinquefoil prefers cool temperatures, and moist but well-drained loamy or sandy soil. It is ideally suited to rockeries, beds and borders, and does very well in coastal locations. Pruning after flowering can be beneficial.
A clump-forming deciduous perennial, potentilla eriocarpa has as wiry a network of branched stems as many in this genus, but its compact dark green foliage gives it a more manicured appearance. Commonly known as simply cinquefoil, it has palmate leaves, each with usually three lance-shaped leaflets. In summer, it produces erect floral stems on which loose clusters of bright yellow, saucer-like blossoms grow. Typically, these flowers have five slightly lobed petals, around a deep yellow or orange centre. Though small, cinquefoil is excellent for groundcover, while its equally at home in rockeries and gravel beds. Grow in well-drained, loamy or sandy soil in full sun. Pruning to ground level in spring encourages growth.
Potentilla fruticosa or Shrubby Cinquefoil is a compact shrub with flowers rather like buttercups. The yellow flowers grow in abundance putting on a good display throughout the summer and well into the autumn. It will grow up to 4 feet in height with a spread of up to 5 feet. It's very easy to grow, will tolerate most types of soil and it's pretty drought tolerant too, so if you forget to water it, it won't be too much of a problem. It's also very hardy over winter so it won't need any extra protection. A very low maintenance plant. You'll get the most flowers if you plant it in moist, well-drained soil, and you'll get the most vibrant colour if you plant it in a partially shady spot.
