A square-foot garden or a giant pot?

a square foot vegetable garden

This is where square-foot gardening meets container planting.

Square-foot gardening may sound like a buzz word back from the 80s, but what it is in a nutshell is one densely-planted vegetable bed. The idea behind it, put forward by Mel Bartholomew 30 years ago, is to help gardeners get a diverse crop from a small allotment.

If you have poor soil and your garden is tiny, build a raised bed or use a giant wicker planter. It can be as small as 1 m x 1 m, or larger.

Fill it up with vegetable compost and divide into square feet (or squares 30 x 30 cm approximately). The division is necessary only for you to know where to plant your vegetables.

That's it. Fill it up with the seeds and plants you have available or look here for new ones.
