Acer japonicum is also known as Fullmoon Maple or Downy Japanese Maple. Native to Japan, this ornamental tree grows to around ten metres in height. When young the bark is smooth, with age it becomes rougher. It has large lobed leaves with a highly toothed edge, giving a feathery or ferny look. They turn a stunning red colour in the autumn. The flowers are small, purple in colour, and they hang in clusters from the branches. It will grow best in acidic or neutral soil, and it will grow in full sun or partial shade, but you'll get the most showy display of autumn leaf colour in partial shade.
