It’s Judi Dench’s birthday today and to celebrate, why not watch a youtube video of her talking about one of her favourite places, Hever Castle in Kent? Judi says that her family often visits: “We come to it in all weathers, in all seasons, and this is where we recharge our batteries.”

It’s Judi Dench’s birthday today and to celebrate, why not watch a youtube video of her talking about one of her favourite places, Hever Castle in Kent? Judi says that her family often visits: “We come to it in all weathers, in all seasons, and this is where we recharge our batteries.”

Hever Castle was at one point in time the family home of Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII and mother of Elizabeth I.

The award winning gardens at the castle are a delight and include the Italian Garden, full of sculpture, the walled Rose Garden containing over 4,000 plants, topiary, a Tudor Garden and a Rhododendron Walk.  That doesn’t even include the variety of water features, the yew maze or the incredible man-made 38 acre lake.

If you’re inspired by the gardens at Hever Castle, and don’t have 800 men prepared to spend two years digging you a lake, here are some less extreme ideas:

Underplanting is key to creating the formal garden look – try rosemary, lavender or salvia, all of which not only look striking, but also smell great.

If you fancy making your own maze or topiary – or a less ambitious hedge, then consider the box tree, a superb evergreen that also comes in a variegated version.

Hydrangeas (such as Annabelle) will add a touch of colour – and interestingly, their colour can change in different soils. To extend the flowering season, wait until they bloom and then remove the heads.

Ironically, this is exactly the same approach that Henry VIII took with Anne Boleyn.
