The word iris comes from a Greek word meaning rainbow. This is a reference to the huge array of colours you can find across the hundreds of different iris species. The iris has featured widely in the work of many famous artists from Vincent van Gogh to Philip Hemogenes Calderon.

You may be familiar with the fleur-de-lis symbol, but what you may not know is that it is actually an image of a stylised iris. The iris is a very reliable plant to grow as long as they have good drainage. Butterflies love them too so they're a great addition to a wildlife garden.
