As they're so easy to grow they're great for kids to cultivate as they'll rarely be disappointed with the results. They're fast growing, and although the flowers don't last all that long, they will self seeds easily and you'll often find them popping up in the garden at different times so you'll always have a splash of gold to brighten your day. The petals are edible. Although they don't add any real flavour to a dish, they can be used to add a little colour to a boring green salad. They're also used to this day as a dye for food, fabric and make-up.
