They're native to South America and it's the flower heads that are the main feature of this plant. They come in a rainbow of colours with curving petals, often with contrasting spots giving them a really exotic look. Hybridisation of Alstroemeria is common and there are about 190 developed cultivars, created to accentuate the special markings and colours of the species. Due to its beauty it is a very popular cut flower.
