Natural solutions are much safer all round so before you choose a chemical solution, take a look at some of our natural, eco-friendly suggestions.

If you're troubled by aphids then a good solution is to to do less weeding. Well isn't that a win-win situation? Leave those dandelions in the lawn and they will attract ladybirds, which in turn will eat the aphids.

If slugs are a nuisance in your garden, beer traps are the perfect solution. Sink a small dish into your borders at regular intervals, deep enough so the slugs can't climb back out, and fill it with beer. Slugs love beer (who can blame them!) so they'll climb in and drown in it. You'll be surprised how many slugs each trap will catch in 24 hours. Most supermarkets sell cheap own-brand lager that will do the job just as well, save the pricier stuff for yourself, slugs aren't fussy! If you keep chickens or ducks, let them take a stroll around the garden from time to time, they love to eat slugs. Chickens will also eat grasshoppers and beetles.
