How to easily grow courgettes

If you’re new to gardening, then courgettes are one of the easiest vegetables to grow.

Courgettes will thrive with very little help and you may well end up with so many courgettes that you have no idea what to do with them all. Though plants like to spread out, you can confine them to growbags or containers, so that also make ideal veggies for balconies.

Step 1

Prepare the soil for courgette plants

Sow courgettes in May or June outside, or a little earlier in April if you want to start seeds off indoors. Courgettes love a well-fertilised growing medium, so make sure you’ve dug a lot of well rotted manure into the sunny spot they’re to be grown in, and have added a general purpose fertiliser.

If you’re starting plants indoors, then create outside planting pockets about two weeks before transplanting seedlings into their final position. Do this by digging a hole about a spade’s depth deep and filling with compost, creating each plant pocket around 90cm apart. If you’re growing courgettes in containers, then grow one or two courgettes per growbag.

Place two or three seeds in each container at a depth of 2.5cm and keep pots moist, removing the two weedier seedlings that appear and keeping only the strongest and healthiest plant. When you’re ready to transplant, acclimatise seedlings and carefully transfer into the planting pockets already created.

Courgettes love a lot of water, so ensure that the soil is kept moist throughout the growing period. Feed them with a potash rich fertiliser every 10 days as soon as the first courgette fruits begin to appear.

You can then harvest fruit when courgettes are 10cm long, helping to prolong the cropping season.
